Verstappen takes pole at Silverstone in thrilling wet-dry qualifying
Norris and Sainz join Red Bull driver on front row
Verstappen secures fifth pole of the season as Russell and Leclerc crash out
Max Verstappen will start the British Grand Prix from pole position after a thrilling wet-dry qualifying session at Silverstone.
The Red Bull driver made it five poles from 11 races this season, with Lando Norris of McLaren and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari joining him on the front row.
Qualifying was delayed by over an hour due to heavy rain, but conditions improved as the session progressed.
Verstappen was in a class of his own throughout qualifying, setting the fastest time in all three segments.
Norris and Sainz were also impressive, but they could not match Verstappen's pace.
The session was marred by two crashes, with George Russell of Mercedes and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari both crashing out in Q3.
Russell lost control of his car at Stowe corner, while Leclerc crashed at Becketts.
Both drivers were unhurt, but their crashes meant that they will start the race from the back of the grid.
Verstappen's pole position is a major boost for his title hopes. The Dutchman now has a 44-point lead over Leclerc in the drivers' standings.
